The sizes, and where they come from

eBay asks for at least 500 × 500 pixels and recommends "about 1600 x 1600", and says photos in a 1:1 or 16:9 shape look best in listings and search results. Its uploader takes files up to 12 MB.

Etsy recommends photos at least 2000 pixels wide and tall, wants the first photo landscape or square, and warns that files over 1 MB may not finish uploading on a slow connection. The Etsy setting keeps every photo under 1 MB.

Poshmark says images "should be sized to 1000 x 1000 pixels for optimal quality".

Depop, Vinted and Grailed publish no required photo size. A square photo shows whole in their grids, so the square setting is a safe choice for them. A photo is never stretched bigger than it was taken.

Before and after: a pink fleece jacket photographed on concrete, then the same fleece on a clean white background
Background removal gives every photo the same clean white backdrop.
